The 16 – 19 Bursary fund replaced the Education Maintenance Allowance in September 2011. Money to support the Bursary Fund is delegated to schools by the government. Each school has to decide how it will administer the scheme.
Any student can, if they meet the following criteria, apply for access to this Fund to support their education :
i) They must be enrolled on a government funded, full or part-time, course;
ii) They must be at least 16 years of age, and not over 19 years of age, on 31st August prior to the academic year for which the grant is being applied for;
iii) They must be a UK resident; and
iv) They must be economically or socially disadvantaged (see appendix for further information about this criteria);
v) They must achieve 90% attendance (excluding authorised absences) and comply with the academy’s behaviour policy
vi) They must provide documentary evidence of household income*
* Documentary evidence can include:
Working tax credit details, or similar government agency forms
Definition of Priority Groups
High priority group
Students who qualify and who fall into one of the following categories :
Are currently in care (as defined by social services)
Are leaving or have recently left care
Are in receipt of Income Support in their own name
Are disabled and in receipt of both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance
Any student in this group is automatically entitled a £1,200 bursary
Payments will be made on a half termly basis (i.e. 6 times per year)
Medium priority group
Students who qualify and who are members of households with a gross annual household income of below £20,000 (Free School Meals eligibility is set at £16,190) and/or is a carer.
Students in this group may be eligible for a contribution towards:
The cost of transport, essential course equipment (including books, stationery etc), trips, uniforms, materials, etc.
Financial support towards exam re-sit fees
Low priority group
Students who qualify and who are members of households with a gross annual income of between £20,000 and £25,000. Students who qualify may be eligible for a contribution towards the same categories as those in the medium priority group.
