BBC News at Meridian School

On Monday this week, in the wake of Theresa May’s announcements
highlighting mental health as a government priority, BBC National News asked
to visit Meridian School in Royston, due to the innovative work that the
Royston Schools Academy Trust (RSAT) is doing to support the mental health of
students in our community.
The BBC team was led by Hugh Pym, the BBC’s Health Correspondent, who was
interested to find out how RSAT is leading the way on tackling mental health
issues in young people. Meridian has committed to employing a counsellor as
part of its team, and also hosts NESSie, an organisation that offers support in
mental health to all the schools in North Hertfordshire.
Theresa May has announced that all secondary schools in England will receive
training in spotting the early signs of poor mental health. However, as Kim
Horner, Meridian’s Acting Headteacher, reflected, although training staff to
identify vulnerable young people is a move forward, the government has not
allocated any funding. Schools, already on extremely tight budgets, simply do
not have sufficient resources to fund therapeutic input for young people who
need it, and without this input, many of our young people will continue to
reach crisis point.  Schools need extra funding to support their work on mental
health.
