Science

The Science GCSE programme at Meridian begins in Year 9.  Students follow the AQA exam board specifications; Biology 8461, Chemistry 8462, Physics 8463 for the most able students and Combined Science (Trilogy) 8465 for everyone else. All students have 9 lessons a fortnight, divided equally between their Biology, Chemistry and Physics teachers.

 

Towards the end of year 9 students can take Triple Science as an option subject depending on their ability and enthusiasm for the subject. The Triple students continue to follow the specifications for the separate Sciences while the remainder of students focus on the Combined Science (Trilogy) 8465.

 

In year 10 all students the students following the Combined Science course will have 11 lessons per fortnight to include 2 lessons concentrating on the maths, literacy and practical skills required in the new GCSE curriculum. The Triple students will increase their lessons to 16 lessons performing with 5 lessons given to each of the three disciples and one Science skills lesson. This format will continue into their final year as they head towards their examinations.


Both courses are academic and demanding. The Triple Science syllabus covers all the work of the Combined Science course, plus more demanding work, to give 3 separate GCSEs in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Both courses can lead to A level sciences in the Sixth Form, providing the higher tier exams are sat. There is no formally assessed coursework in the new GCSE syllabuses but there are a suite of experiments that all students are required to complete.
