Modern Foreign Languages

Our aim is to enable students to develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening in a foreign language and to learn about the diverse cultures of Francophone and Hispanic countries.

Year 9

During Year 9, the vast majority of students have the opportunity to study at least one foreign language either French or Spanish and some students will have the opportunity to study both. The AQA GCSE course will be started and this will allow students to develop their language skills, learning more complex structures and gaining a wide vocabulary.

Key Stage 4 Year 10-11

Students who opt for MFL will continue following the AQA specification. The following topic areas will be covered over the three years:

  • Identity and Culture
  • Local area, holidays and travel
  • School, future aspirations and the World of Work
  • National and Global dimension

The course is assessed at the end of Year 11 and there are four exams which students can either complete at Higher (9 – 5) or Foundation (4 – 1) Level.

The exam breakdown is as follows:

Listening (25%)

Foundation (40 minutes) / Higher (50 minutes)

Speaking (25%)

Foundation (7-9 minutes) / Higher (10-12 minutes)

Reading (25%)

Foundation (1 hour) / Higher (1 hour 15 minutes)

Writing (25%)
